Canberra plans for air freight hub

With no curfew on flights, Canberra Airport reckons it can take the pressure off Sydney’s growing air freight task

Canberra Airport could become a 24-hour hub for air freight, if its newly endorsed master plan comes to fruition.

The 2014 master plan replaces the 2009 version, and calls for a move to round-the-clock freight flights within the next few years. The airport also plans to encourage more passenger flights, including international journeys.

The plan was approved by Infrastructure and Regional Development minister Warren Truss on Thursday last week.

He says greater utilisation of the airport would be a boost for the local economy.

“Canberra Airport plays a significant role in the ACT economy, generating jobs, investment and tourism,” Truss notes.

“Ongoing investment in the airport will provide benefits to the local, regional and national economies for many years to come.”

Canberra Airport is 275km from Sydney Airport.

While it currently closes daily, it is far from homes and is not subject to a night time curfew on take offs and landings.

Truss says that gives it room to expand its offering in terms of both freight and passenger flights.

The airport is expected to release the Master Plan to the public within 50 days.
