The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is urging drivers to take care on roads this winter to bring down the road toll.

Seventy drivers were killed on Victorian roads over the past two years during winter.

TAC, together with Victoria Police and the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), believes the number of accidents could spiral if the wet and adverse weather conditions continue.

Drivers have less control over their vehicles in wet conditions and find it harder to stop.

TAC Road Safety Manager Samantha Cockfield says every death on the roads is preventable.

“Slowing down will reduce the likelihood of emergency braking and if it does occur, there will be more time to react and take evasive action,” she says.

One if five cars on Victoria’s roads have at least one un-roadworthy tyre, according to an RACV study.

“Many drivers take tyre tread, pressure and condition for granted but their importance should not be underestimated,” Cockfield says.

“Quality tyres in good condition should be the difference between surviving a crash or avoiding one completely.

“Slow down, and if you can see fog or mist ahead, reduce your speed before you enter and drive accordingly.”
