Another section of the Pacific Highway duplication project in NSW has started to create more than 20km of four lane divided road.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese today marked the start of the $698.3 million duplication project from Sapphire to Woolgoolga.

The funds are part of a $1.3 billion federal investment in the duplication project.

“It will create 25 kilometres of four lane divided road, making the Sapphire to Woolgoolga section safer for people and cutting travel times for cars and trucks,” Albanese says of the project.

“The project will also help improve safety for local motorists in the growing northern suburbs of Coffs Harbour by diverting them from the highway to an upgraded local service road.”

With the start of the project, Albanese says construction is underway or about to begin on 125km of the highway.

“The Kempsey, Ballina, Glenugie and Bulahdelah bypasses are underway, as is the Banora Point upgrade further north,” he says.

The Federal Government has committed $610 million to the 25km duplication, with $88.3 million coming from the NSW Government.

The upgrade is due to be completed in 2014 and includes interchanges, improved local road and an alternative route for those not wanting to use the highway.
