The search is on for Australia’s top young truck driver, but the winner will no longer be awarded a brand new Scania prime mover.

Scania has launched its Young Australian Truck Driver Competition 2010 today to give drivers under the age of 40 the chance to win $10,000.

The winner of the inaugural 2007 competition, David Whyte, was given a $220,000 prime mover and 5000 litres of free fuel.

Nominated drivers will be required to sit a web-based test before competing at the final on November 20.

As well as exceptional driving skills, Scania says drivers must show a positive attitude, road safety awareness, stamina and professional pride.

Scania will announce the winner on the day of the final.

The Australian Trucking Association has backed the competition, with ATA Chairman David Simon saying it will highlight the professionalism of young truck drivers and encourage others to lift their standards.

“These are important objectives for the industry as a whole, which is why the ATA has endorsed the 2010 Scania Young Australian Truck Driver Competition, after our close involvement in the inaugural competition in 2007,” Simon says.

The ATA will be part of the judging panel that decides the winner.

Simon has urged young drivers to visit Scania’s website to enter or to encourage their friends to enter “if they have the exceptional skills, positive attitude, stamina and professional pride”.

The Australian event is part of Scania’s global driver of the year events, which will take place in 28 countries this year. The company expects to attract about 50,000 entrants.

Scania is to be congratulated and i am not condemning the competition, but they and the judges need to ensure they scrutinise what the winner plans to do with the truck?
