Work is expected to begin this year on upgrades to the Barton Highway in NSW after tenders were called to bid for the project.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese says the project will straighten and flatten 4.5km of the highway along the Gounyan Curves section.

Coming from the Federal Government’s $20 million Barton Highway Safety Package, the project will also install hazard protections, lay sealed shoulders and build a new southbound overtaking lane.

Once this work is completed in late 2011, the 7,000 motorists and truck drivers that use this section of highway daily will experience quicker and safer driving conditions, with the result over time being fewer accidents and less loss of life,” Albanese says.

“We expected to have workers and their equipment on site by the end of this year.”

Construction companies interested in undertaking the work have until July 14 to submit their bid. The process is being managed by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.
