A police blitz on road users in NSW will begin next month in a bid to reduce crashes.
Operation Hectic will begin in mid July and run into August in the Hurstville area, about 30 minutes south-west of Sydney’s CBD.
On-road enforcement such as random breath testing and speed detection will increase significantly and highway patrol cars from surrounding regions will be brought in.
According to the NSW Police, recent data recorded a higher than normal rate of major crashes in peak hour traffic on the major roadways in the Hurstville area and the Riverwood, Kingsgrove and Bevery Hills districts.
Senior Sergeant Branko Kubecka from Hurstville’s highway patrol unit says there will be a highly visible police presence to deter dangerous driving.
“The aim of this operation is to reduce road trauma in the Hurstville area by saturating specific areas with a large number of police to promote road safety strategies,” he says.
“The increase in crashes seemed to be as a result of absent minded drivers rushing to and from work.”
Kubecka says people are not using mobile phones while driving, speeding and failing to fasten seatbelts.
