A man has been charged over a fatal truck crash in southern NSW last week that caused a truck to run off the road and crash down an embankment.
The 74-year-old driver of a car that left the scene of the incident turned himself into police after allegations the vehicle turned in front of the truck onto the Hume Highway at Bookham east of Yass.
The man was charged with dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving causing death. He will face court on July 6.
The incident happened about 2:20pm on May 16 as the truck laden with cattle was travelling south on the highway.
The truck driver was freed from the wreckage by passers-by and was taken to hospital, but his 24-year-old girlfriend died at the scene. “Her body was released from the badly damaged truck almost six hours after the crash,” a police statement reads.
Police says 23 cattle were either killed in the incident or had to be destroyed due to their injuries.
A report will be prepared for the NSW coroner.
