The first contract to build an upgraded truck change-over stop at Nhil in Victorial has been awarded with construction due to be completed by the middle of this year.
The contract is for the construction of new turning lanes into the truck stop off the Western Highway in Nhill and is set to start next month.
Construction on the second stage is expected to begin mid-year 2010.
When the upgrade is completed the new trailer exchange will provide enough spaces for up to 100 trucks to swap trailers at the halfway point between Adelaide and Melbourne.
“The new turning lanes will give drivers a safe area to manoeuvre their trucks when turning into and out of the trailer exchange site,” Albanese says.
The existing trailer exchange currently accommodates 23 vehicle spaces, causing safety concerns.
A spokesperson for Albanese says the lack of space requires many truck drivers to swap trailers in local streets late at night or early in the morning.
Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas says the safe access point means a safer roadway for other motorists travelling on the Western Highway.
“In a boost for the town, the new trailer exchange will also be located further away from the Nhill township and will provide truck drivers with more spaces to swap their trailers,” he says.
The truck facility at Nhill is being delivered in addition to the $50 million program to improve safety along the Western Highway between Stawell and the South Australian border.
