Funds to fix Tasmania’s crumbling rail infrastructure will be fast-tracked in a bid to complete the upgrades a year ahead of schedule.
The Rudd Government will bring forward $14 million earmarked for the maintenance program on the rail system, which was abandoned by Pacific National last year and bought by the State Government.
The money was due to be delivered next year, but Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the upgrades can be completed faster than originally anticipated.
Under the program, bridges will be fixed along with new rail sleepers and rails, level crossings and better drainage.
“Instead of late 2011, the maintenance work is now expected to be completed by the end of this year,” Albanese says.
“We're determined to sustain this momentum and complete the modernisation of the network as soon as possible.”
Albanese says the $14 million is the first part of a $61 million instalment plan.
Along with maintenance money, Albanese says the Rudd Government will also commit funds to the rail network to increase capacity and secure the future of the transport mode.
