Motorists are being warned to expect long traffic delays after a fatal crash between a car and truck north of Sydney today.
Emergency services were called to Clarendon near Windsor about 7.15am after reports of an incident between the vehicles.
The vehicles collided at an intersection, closing off the Hawkesbury Valley Way indefinitely as crash investigators comb the scene and traffic diversions are set up.
The driver of the car died in hospital from serious injuries, while the rear passenger is in a critical condition. Both were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed.
There was also a passenger in the front seat, but police say he was able to free himself and was treated for minor injuries.
The 48-year-old truck driver escaped the crash uninjured and has been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests
The Hawkesbury Valley Way has been closed and police have established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
There are diversions in place with all eastbound traffic being diverted from the Hawkesbury Valley Way onto Racecourse Road while westbound traffic is being turned around to head back towards Windsor.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
