Traffic south-west of Sydney was brought to a standstill today when a car is believed to have hit a truck travelling in the opposite direction.
Police were forced to close the busy Menangle Road in both directions during peak-hour at Douglas Park and impose traffic diversions after the incident, which happened about 7:25am.
A police spokesman says the route began opening around 1.30pm, as investigators piece together what happened.
“It appears the Suzuki [car] crossed the wrong side of the road,” the spokesman says.
The 78-year-old female who was a passenger in the car died at the scene and the 79-year-old male driver was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.
The 40-year-old truck driver was uninjured, but he was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
A post mortem examination will be carried out on the woman and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
