Work has started on four new rest stops as well as three existing sites on the Dukes Highway in South Australia.
The Rudd Government will spend $2.6 million on the project in a bid to increase safety.
“These works will assist in addressing safety issues on the Dukes Highway by providing more opportunities for drivers to stop and rest up then have a safe onward journey,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese says.
The new rest areas will be constructed 11km east of Tailem Bend and 6km west of Border Town in the westbound direction and 16.5km east of Tailem Bend and West of the entrance to Culburra eastbound.
Sites near Keith, Kiki and Tintinara will all be upgraded.
The project is expected to be completed in June this year.
