The likelihood of a 35 kilometre standard gauge rail line connecting the Illawarra line to the Main Southern Line in New South Wales is a step closer following the announcement of a feasibility study into the proposal.
ACIL Tasman and Hyder Consulting have been selected to conduct the $3 million study into the proposed project to connect Wollongong with Sydney via Campbelltown.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese says both companies have the experience and expertise to determine if the project is cost effective and viable.
“In making these conclusions the study will assess existing infrastructure, engineering requirements and likely demand for the proposed line, as well as undertake detailed economic and financial modelling,” Albanese says.
“Commissioning of this detailed planning work follows an earlier pre-feasibility study which found that completing the rail line has long term economic merit but more work needed to be done before sensible investment decisions could be made”.
