Regional roads in south-west Queensland will receive a much-needed funding boost as part of a million-dollar investment from the Rudd and Bligh governments.
Boral Resources has been awarded an $8 million contract to reseal 405 kilometres of road that includes the Landsborough, Warrego and Mitchell highways.
Surfaces on the Carnarvon, Balonne, Barwon, Moonie and Castlereagh highways will also be resealed.
Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says the project will improve the quality and safety of the region’s road network.
“Once completed, the resealing work will protect the road surface from the wear and tear caused by environmental and traffic conditions,” Albanese says.
The resealing program will begin in March and will be completed in April or May depending on the weather.
Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace says bitumen will be sprayed over existing sealed roads before a surface layer or stone is applied.
“This process helps to prevent cracking, maintain a watertight seal over the road and provide a suitable surface for tyres to grip the road,” Wallace says.
