December 7, 2009
Police are still investigating the cause of a collision south of Sydney that killed five people, left a truck driver in shock and shut down a road for almost 14 hours.
The incident happened about 8.15am on December 6 when a westbound semi-trailer and an eastbound sedan collided on Picton Road at Wilton.
The five people in the car, including a three-month old child, died at the scene, while the 56-year-old truck driver was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
A police spokeswoman says investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident.
“The male driver of an eastbound Toyota Landcruiser is assisting police officers attached to the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit with their inquiries,” a police statement reads.
A NSW Police spokeswoman says Picton Road was closed until 10pm last night, while police have appealed for any witnesses to help with their investigations.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," the police statement says.
Another four people died on NSW roads on December 6, bringing the road toll to 437 – 91 more than the same time last year.
