The New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority will visit truck rest stops along the Newell Highway as part of a public education drive to improve safety.

The move comes as the plan to lower to speed limit on the Highway by 10km/h to 100km/h takes effect today.

The visits will be held at Jerilderie on December 17 and 18 and at West Wyalong in early 2010 and will be used to address issues such as speeding, fatigue, drink driving and the overloading of vehicles.

“This is an important initiative that will give heavy vehicle drivers an opportunity to discuss road safety from a compliance and behavioural perspective,” a spokesperson for the RTA says.

The campaign will be run by RTA inspectors and a road safety project officer.

The RTA claims the reduction in the speed limit is expected to save between 10 and 20 lives over the next five years and improve traffic conditions on the highway.

Lowering the speed limit is the RTA's and other road safety zealots answer to everything! And there beleif is based on nonsense science. Decreasing the speed may in fact increase deaths if drivers are more bored and become distracted

Why would they bother listening now? It's not like they listened to anything anyone else had to say before they axed the spped limit. I wonder if they'll bring their scales along like they did last time...?
