Boom gates and other safety measures will be added to eight high risk level crossings in New South Wales as part of the Rudd Government's multi-million dollar rail safety program.

Stop signs will be replaced by eight lights and boom gates at crossings in Narrabri, Kootingal, Wards River, Craven, Kearsly, Killawarra, Kelly’s Plains and Gap.

The projects will be delivered by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) under the $42.7 million Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program.

About 100 accidents occur at rail crossings every year, while there were seven incidents in NSW between July 2007 and June 2008.
