The Northern Territory Government will investigate ways to deepen Darwin’s East Arm Wharf to allow larger vessels into the facility regardless of tidal conditions.

According to Territory Minister for Infrastructure Delia Lawrie, tenders are currently being invited for two feasibility studies which will turn Darwin Port into a global facility, vital to the Australian economy.

“The proposed expansion of East Arm Wharf will significantly increase the Port of Darwin’s capacity, reduce costs as well as confirm Darwin as a significant transport and logistics centre,” Lawrie says.

The Federal Government will contribute $3.2 million towards the proposed studies which are expected to determine deepening and realignment should take place at the wharf.

This donation would increase to $50 million should the upgrades take place at what the Territory Government says is the country’s largest live cattle export port.
