Gold Coast freight route to re-open this year

The Queensland department of transport and main roads has released a re-opening date for a major Gold Coast thoroughfare

Queensland’s department of transport and main roads has announced that a major freight route outside of Gold Coast is set to re-open by September following significant damage.

The department says reconstruction work to repair Tamborine Mountain Road will be finished within the coming months.

The transport department says the cliff-face has since been secured and now the focus turns to restoring the damaged road to allow for freight traffic to renew services through the area by September.

“The complex nature of the work zone and the incredibly steep terrain, on top of heavy rain periods, has meant reconstruction has taken longer than initially anticipated, but we are pleased to see significant progress being made,” transport and main roads acting regional director Andrew Wheeler says.

“The project team has successfully anchored large, unstable rocks and installed steel mesh on the cliff-face to stabilise the steep slope and restore safety.”

The transport department acknowledges it’s been a “massive effort” to complete the work, with employees having to hang on ropes to help secure the rock face and allow for the road to be restored.

Wheeler says the damaged road will be rebuilt and remaining landslips on Tamborine Mountain Road will be repaired for freight operators using the route.

“A large catch fence has been installed on the upslope to reduce the risk of rock falls and ensure it is safe to work on the road below,” he says.

“We thank the local community for being patient. We know this project has impacted residents and businesses, but safety has always been our number one priority.”
