RVS transition period extended

The road vehicle standards period will extend by a year

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications has advised the road vehicle standards (RVS) transitional period will be extended by 12 months until June 30, 2023.

The extension supports those in the transport industry who have been affected by the COVID pandemic and global supply chain issues resulting from it, which have made it challenging to transition to the new regulatory framework in time.

Any previous transitional period deadlines that occurred before June 30, 2022 have also been extended by 12 months, but it’s important to note this doesn’t include any deadlines that have already expired.

The extension will also facilitate an uninterrupted supply of vehicles to the market by allowing the provision of vehicles approved under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 that would otherwise not be able to be provided to the market past June 30, 2022.

The Department says it is important that businesses continue making arrangements to transition to the RVS legislation so they can continue providing vehicles after July 1, 2023.

“We will continue to work with you to ensure the transition to the new regulatory framework is as smooth as possible,” the Department’s advice says.

“If you have already transitioned to the RVS legislation you can continue providing road vehicles using approvals granted to you under the new legislation.

“We are in the process of updating relevant pages on the Department’s website and this will be completed shortly.”
