ACT introduces new electric garbage truck

The ACT government is working with Bucher to roll out a new electric garbage truck

The ACT government says it is adding to its environmentally conscious transport initiative by trialling a new electric garbage truck on its streets.

According to the ACT government, transport is responsible for 60 per cent of harmful emissions in the territory, meaning the government has prioritised switching fuelled vehicles to electric ones in the pursuit of tackling climate change.

After adding 12 battery electric buses to the Transport Canberra fleet earlier this year and ordering another 90 for the near future, the ACT government is now introducing zero emissions garbage trucks.

To be based at the ACT government’s Allara Street depot in Civic, the electric garbage truck has already been fitted with charging infrastructure due to an earlier electric tipper truck trial.

The trial will help the territory government understand the features and benefits of electric powered heavy commercial vehicles to provide Canberra with cleaner and quieter waste and recycling services in the future.

The ACT government says it’s excited for the proposition of an electric garbage truck fleet in the ACT.

“Bucher Municipal is pleased to be partnering with the ACT government and Transport Canberra and City Services for a trial of our full electric waste compaction vehicle,” Bucher Municipal’s Darren Gear says.

“Our company believes in solving challenges with key partnerships through technology and we strive to develop new equipment that meets environmental outcomes for now and into the future.”
