TWA and Daimler link in scholarships for transport women

Four places available in Driving the Difference initiative

Transport Women Australia Limited (TWAL) and Daimler Truck and Bus Australia Pacific have established a scholarship program for women in, or wishing to join, the transport industry.

The scholarships enable women within the industry to undertake a course that will advance their careers or expand their knowledge to enhance their current position, or give other women the chance to become part of the industry.

Daimler Truck and Bus Australia Pacific president and CEO, Daniel Whitehead says the company is proud to work with TWA to sponsor the ‘Driving the Difference Scholarship’ as part of its continued focus on gender equality.

“The sponsorship is an example of Daimler’s ongoing commitment to providing continued support of expanding opportunities for women to explore career pathways and growth within a male dominated industry,” Whitehead says.

There will be four scholarships awarded this year with the winners announced at the TWAL 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on November 16.

The program opens on September 16 and the closing date for applications is October 31.

TWAL chair Jacquelene Brotherton says the group is excited about the ‘Driving the Difference Scholarship’ program.

“We are very proud to bring these scholarships to this industry in collaboration with our partner, Daimler Truck and Bus,” Brotherton says.

Daimler recently became the only commercial vehicle manufacturer to be accredited with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (ECOGE).

The EOCGE classification aims to encourage, recognise and promote an active commitment to achieving gender equality in Australian workplaces and is a voluntary leading practice recognition program that is separate to the Equal Opportunity Act.

The criteria focuses on preventing sex-based harassment and discrimination as well as targets for improving gender equality outcomes.

Whitehead says Daimler is firmly committed to attracting and retaining gender diverse talent and achieving true gender equality and pay equity.

“Although the commercial vehicle industry has traditionally been dominated by men, we can change that by leading the way with the promotion of gender diversity benefits and equitable practices,” Whitehead adds.
