NHVR launches EWD approval process

The regulator will assess electronic work diaries for the first time after approving the system

Australia is taking another step towards broader implementation of the electronic work diary (EWD) system, with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) opening applications for its approval process today.

After announcing in April that it had decided EWDs would provide a sustainable and effective alternative to written work diaries, the NHVR will now assess some models of EWD on the market against its EWD standards for the first time.

Following this process, the regulator will list the approved systems on its website.

NHVR safety standards director Greg Fill said the acceptance of applications was an important milestone, saying he expected to see the first applications lodged in the coming weeks.

“We’ve spoken to many of the 37 technology providers and transport operators that have lodged a Notice of Intent with the NHVR and they are at different stages of development,” he said.

“Only products that meet the NHVR Standards and are approved by the NHVR can be used for regulatory purposes to record work and rest hours.”

EWD developers seeking NHVR approval can apply via the NHVR website free of charge, as the regulator has agreed to waive any regulatory feed for companies or individuals submitting applications for approval in the first year of operations.

Further guidelines and education material for drivers, record keepers, transport operators and technology providers will be available next month, the regulator says.
