McAleese positive on Cootes despite rollover

NSW road authorities accept invitation to survey 15 other trucks after accident

McAleese has volunteered 15 trucks for independent survey following the rollover of a Cootes gas tanker on the Great Western Highway yesterday.

The offer was taken up by New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) at its Wetherill Park inspection station.

It is understood all trucks, including the crashed vehicle, were passed.

The Cootes LPG tanker crossed the highway in Werrington and hit a car, trapping the driver.

It then may have come into contact with a low embankment and rolled over.

Expressing relief that the outcome had not been worse for those involved, the spokesperson says the truck was less than five years old and had passed a recent maintenance check.

Fatigue was not thought to be a factor as the driver had just returned from a week’s leave.

The driver’s training was up to date and, despite the incident he had followed company procedure for dealing with rollovers.

McAleese is confident that the incident is not an echo of the problems the Cootes fleet faced 18 months ago.
